I had really hoped he was setting up for a question about how eliminating the usage of personal information for targeted ads would change profitability and just how ingrained the need to grab every tidbit of data is in Facebooks business model.
I didn’t actually expect them to figure that out, but I held out a sliver of hope.

The senators should have had their aides do the questioning.

Why we expect people who have only ever been in public service (and the entire giant cluster*** that is government budgeting) to understand contribution margins, monetization strategies, supply and demand, and the law of unintended consequences is far, far beyond me.

Part of the problem with the American governmentis that almost everyone involved is 60 or older. Too old to have any desire to understand anything they don’t like.

Also there’s a difference between running ads targeted at individual users, and selling those individual users information (along with all their friends details) to outside parties for “other” uses. I don’t particularly mind seeing ads on facebook, or having ads follow me around the internet based on what I’ve recently searched for or that they believe may be relevant to my demographic. That’s an entirely different animal from unknowingly being sold for outside research and nefarious purposes.
Haven’t dug much in to everything that was discussed, but
this is also completely avoiding the ridiculous number of fake/unverified
profiles (aka trolls) on social media sites like facebook and twitter. I’m curious
to learn someday what % of user profiles don’t tie back to an actual individual
(preferably the same one they claim to be) and the % of user activity triggered
by such accounts.
One thing these discussions are showing is just how antiquated and completely unprepared for our current social landscape (let alone future) these dinosaurs running government are. Plenty of examples of this type of shit going on these days - like authorities allowing testing of autonomous vehicles on public roads not really knowing what the hell they’re signing up their population for as far as risks go.

I heard a quote from a reporter in the room along the lines of (my best guess): “it was like being in a 5 hour call with tech support, or trying to explain to your parents how an iphone works.”
Maybe on Day 2 they’ll discuss the difference between the mobile app and desktop versions. “You mean, Facebook is in my DESK? ”

This hearing would’ve been a perfect usage of all the interns these people have. Stick them all in a room to draft questions and potential rebuttals.
Then draft a breakdown of what Facebook is/does in hopes of stopping the old folks from looking like complete idiots.
It’s only worse because of how long the idea of a company making its revenue from advertising has been around. Surely most of these folks have heard advertising on radio broadcasts and tv or seen them in newspapers and magazines.

Members of Congress can’t possibly regulate Facebook. They don’t understand it . (WaPo)

I wonder if he has a special booster seat he only uses for House hearings, and another one for Senate hearings.

I think of my family members over 60 are in bed by 9 and refuse to learn how to use their phones properly and then think “yep this is reason #23 why nothing gets done”.

I believe they mean can’t “effectively” regulate it. When has that stopped them from trying?
